Human Design: types, authorities and profile lines

Human Design draws a chart from two moments: your birth, and a point about 88 days before it. The chart shows nine centres and the channels between them.

From the chart come your type, a strategy for starting things, and an authority for making decisions. Start with these three. The rest of the chart adds detail.

The five types

The type describes how your energy works with other people. Each type has a strategy, and a feeling that tells you whether you are on track.

Generator

A builder with sustainable sacral energy for work that receives a genuine bodily response. Fulfilment comes from responding rather than mentally initiating.

Strategy
To respond. Wait for something concrete to respond to and notice the body's yes, no or lack of energy. Let response choose where sustained effort belongs.
On track
Satisfaction
Off track
Frustration
How to read the two
Satisfaction is the alignment signal. Repeated frustration often points to initiating mentally, forcing work or remaining with commitments that no longer receive energy.

Manifesting Generator

A fast, multi-passionate builder whose path may include shortcuts and course corrections. Respond first, then inform those affected before moving.

Strategy
To respond, then inform. Respond before moving, check that energy is genuinely available, then inform people affected by the action. Course correction is part of the process.
On track
Satisfaction
Off track
Frustration
How to read the two
Satisfaction signals correct engagement; frustration often shows forced action, while anger may appear when movement is blocked or others were not informed.

Manifestor

An initiating type designed to start movements independently. Impact improves when affected people are informed before action.

Strategy
To inform before you act. Inform before initiating. This is not asking permission; it reduces resistance by letting affected people know what is about to happen.
On track
Peace
Off track
Anger
How to read the two
Peace suggests aligned initiation; recurring anger can signal interference, poor timing or insufficient informing.

Projector

A guide who sees people and systems deeply but does not have consistent sacral work energy. Recognition and correct invitations open the right roles and relationships.

Strategy
Wait for the invitation. For major roles, commitments and relationships, wait for recognition and a clear invitation. Everyday choices still follow your inner authority.
On track
Success
Off track
Bitterness
How to read the two
Success suggests correct recognition and guidance. Bitterness often signals trying to prove value, guiding without recognition or staying where insight is not welcomed.

Reflector

A highly receptive lunar type with no defined centres, sampling the health of people and environments. Major decisions benefit from a full lunar cycle and varied perspectives.

Strategy
Wait a lunar cycle (~28 days). Allow roughly one lunar cycle for major decisions, talking through the choice in different places and with trusted people without giving them authority over it.
On track
Surprise
Off track
Disappointment
How to read the two
Surprise suggests a healthy, varied life. Persistent disappointment can indicate unsuitable people, places or expectations.

The seven authorities

The authority is the place in you to rely on for important decisions. Which one you have follows from your defined centres.

Emotional (Solar Plexus)

There is no reliable truth in the emotional now. Let the emotional wave move through highs and lows, then decide when the choice still feels clear and stable; avoid commitments made at a peak or trough.

Sacral

For concrete yes/no choices, listen to the immediate gut response, sound, expansion or contraction. The sacral response is present-tense energy, not a mental argument.

Splenic

Trust the quiet, immediate instinct about safety, health and timing. It speaks once in the present and is easily drowned out by fear or later reasoning.

Ego / Heart

Commit only where the will genuinely wants to invest and can support the promise. Speak the desire aloud and test whether it is truly yours rather than a need to prove worth.

Self-Projected (G)

Talk the decision aloud with a neutral listener and hear whether your own voice expresses identity and direction. The listener is a sounding board, not the decision-maker.

Mental / Environmental (None)

Use trusted people as sounding boards and notice how the choice feels across suitable environments. Clarity develops through hearing yourself, not through another person's advice.

Lunar (Reflector)

Give major decisions about one lunar cycle. Sample the choice through changing days, places and conversations, and watch what remains consistent without forcing a deadline.

The six profile lines

A profile is two of these lines, such as 2/4. The first describes how you see yourself, the second what others meet in you.

1

Foundation / Investigator

Build security through research and a dependable base before expression.

2

Natural / Hermit

An innate quality develops privately and is often called out by others.

3

Experimenter

Learns through trial, error, adaptation and direct contact with reality.

4

Networker

Influence and opportunity move through friendship, trust and existing relationships.

5

Practical / Projected

Others project expectations onto this line; it can universalize practical solutions when scope is clear.

6

Role Model

Moves from experience to observation and eventually embodied perspective that others can respect.

The nine centres

A defined centre works in a steady way and is your own. An open centre takes in the energy of others, and that is where experience grows.

Head (Crown)

Defined
Mental pressure and inspiration are consistent. Use inspiration as material for awareness, not as authority for decisions.
Open
You sample and amplify questions and inspiration. Wisdom is knowing which questions are not yours to answer.

Ajna

Defined
A consistent way of conceptualizing and organizing thought. Certainty is a mental quality, not a substitute for inner authority.
Open
Thinking is flexible and can see many viewpoints. Wisdom is freedom from needing to appear certain.

Throat

Defined
A consistent mode of expression and manifestation. Impact still depends on timing, strategy and authority.
Open
Expression adapts to context and other people. Watch pressure to speak or act merely to attract attention.

G / Identity

Defined
A stable sense of identity, love and direction. The expression can vary, but an underlying orientation remains recognizable.
Open
Identity and direction are fluid and strongly affected by place and company. The right environment matters more than forcing a fixed identity.

Heart / Ego

Defined
Willpower, value and material commitment can operate consistently, but still need rest and correct promises.
Open
Willpower and self-worth fluctuate. Wisdom comes from having nothing to prove and making fewer, cleaner promises.

Solar Plexus

Defined
An emotional wave is consistent and sets the authority whenever defined. Time allows clarity to emerge beyond the immediate high or low.
Open
You absorb and amplify emotional climates. Wisdom is distinguishing your own feeling from what entered through others.

Sacral

Defined
Reliable life-force and work energy are available in response. Satisfaction grows through correct engagement and stopping when energy is complete.
Open
Energy is inconsistent and can be amplified around generators. Wisdom is recognizing when enough is enough and resting before exhaustion.

Spleen

Defined
Intuition, instinct and present-moment body awareness operate consistently. The signal is quiet, immediate and not guaranteed to repeat.
Open
Intuition and fear vary with people and places. Wisdom develops around health, safety and releasing what is no longer good.

Root

Defined
Pressure, stress and momentum have a consistent internal pattern. Correct pacing turns pressure into productive fuel.
Open
External pressure is amplified and can create urgency to finish or escape stress. Wisdom is not hurrying simply to be free of pressure.
